On December 2, 1979, Elvita Adams jumped from the 86th floor observatory - only to be caught up in the loving arms of the stiff updraft of wind blowing around the Empire State, which blew her back toward the building. She fell on a two-and-a-half foot ledge one floor below her point of departure, fracturing her hip. A guard heard her moans and pulled her through a window to safety.
